The city of San Diego, California is known for four things: the sunny weather, the beautiful beaches, wildlife conservation and being the home of the United States Navy's Pacific Fleet. The city possesses a great deal of ingenuity in making the most of its assets; often combining two or more of these aspects to promote itself as a major destination for tourists and the retirement community. The city is very conscious of its strengths, one of which is that it is a favourite retreat of sailors and their families and provides a variety of attractions catering to their tastes and lifestyles, one of which is the Aircraft Carrier Museum.

Explaining the form and appeal of this venue necessitates looking back to the early 20th century, when the US Navy first discovered the strategic value of San Diego and relocated the Navy Air Station on Coronado Island. This move would herald a symbiotic relationship between the Navy and the city's economy. The Aircraft Carrier Museum in downtown San Diego is one the many of its kind which pays tribute to the sailors who was once instrumental to the city's booming economy. It is also known as the USS Midway Museum as it houses the aircraft carrier Midway.

This great ship is resembles a small functional city in both girth and utility and boasts a proud service record of over 50 years. She was honorably decommissioned in 1992 in a ceremony whose keynote address was delivered by the then Secretary of Defense Richard Cheney, and later found a permanent retirement home in San Diego's Navy Pier. Here she has remained since 2003, open to the public who wishes to draw out the hidden tales and admire the relics of her old life as a sea-base of brave servicemen.

Visitors are invited to see the flight deck, primary flight control, hangar deck, tactical command center and the quarters of captains, admirals and officers. Over 60 exhibits are housed here, as well as a 25 restored air crafts for the public's viewing pleasure. While the planes are not cleared for take off, visitors can still get a taste of the thrill experienced by fighter pilots launching their vessels into the sky via the flight simulators. These tours are accompanied with a narration by the self-guiding audio tour issued at admission, recreating the routines of the sea-bound servicemen and women. Tourists are also allowed to clamber atop the ship's bow to enjoy unparalleled views of the harbor and city skyline, even without paying admission.

If you're enjoying a holiday in one of the San Diego hotels, this maritime museum is a must-not-miss adventure. When booking hotels San Diego, it is recommended that you use SanDiegoHotelseye.com. This is a travel portal that can get you great rates on hotel accommodation and ensure you won't miss out on the best of San Diego attractions.

May is Museum Month so if you've been thinking about making this outing, this week might be a nice time.

Each year, about 59 million visitors visit Canadian museums-not just the big ones, but all the local operations featuring everything from ceramics to dories (our famed Maritime flat-bottom boats).

Most kids go to the museum at least once during the school year, but that doesn't mean you can't go again, or more often. In fact, one way to hook your kids on the museum is to tell them you'll go back to check out the stuff that really piqued their interest. Once the bug has bitten, you can expand the interest with books, toys, and related media.

To make the most of your outing, check out these easy tips:

Look at the website first

It's impossible to see everything, especially in a large city museum, so check out the types of exhibits available first. Museum websites are pretty extensive these days and lots of them have a kid section with highlights for the under-12 set.

Think big, violent, and morbid One thing that volunteering for school outings has taught me: hook the kids where they're interested and watch the attention span grow. Dinosaurs, amour, swords, and Egyptian mummies are always a good bet. Kids enjoy getting so close to something that scary without actually being in danger. "They're dead and they can't do anything,~ one child observed cryptically about the mummies when interviewed by the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review. Yup.

Learn and wonder together

Some parents traipse their kids through the exhibits with non-stop commentary. Ask any guide or docent and he'll tell you he's seen it. But nobody needs to do that. Observations ("Hey, look at that-"), open-ended questions ("Wow, how do you think it-?") and plain old-fashioned curiosity will engage your child better than explanations and you'll have a lot more fun in the process.

Get interactive

Take advantage of any interactive exhibits. Kids can go only so long just looking and listening. If there's something to touch, even if it's a screen, let the kids loose on it. Don't expect them to stay in engaged in one spot for longer than 10 - 15 minutes.

Keep the experience alive

After your trip and depending on your child's age, ask her to create a picture of her favorite item or exhibit or talk about the outing together and what you'd like to go back to see. Or rent Night at the Museum. (Did you know the American Museum of Natural History, upon which the film is based, was so inspired by the story that they started their own museum sleepovers?) When kids think of museums as libraries-places to return to over and over again-they become lifelong museum lovers and supporters.

The San Diego museum scene is one of the most diverse and interesting there is and with over 90 museums listed, there are definitely a lot from which to choose. I thought that instead of listing out all the museums in San Diego, it would be a good idea introduce some of the ones I feel are of the top worth seeing museums.

For those that are not familiar with San Diego, let me start with the museums in Balboa Park. The park, which is like the Mecca for museums with close to twenty museums from which to choose, is one of the most beautiful parks there is. Though it is hard to narrow down to just a handful, here are the museums I feel you should visit on your trip to Balboa Park:

o Museum of History: Learn the history of San Diego through photographs and cultural artifacts dating back to the 1840s.

o SD Automotive Museum: Stole through an array of car exhibits featuring the history of automotive progression.

o SD Museum of Man: Explore the anthropology of man with artifacts, folklore, and human remains that tell the story of mankind.

o SD Museum of Art: Browse through collections of fine and contemporary art from Renaissance, Asian, to nineteenth century European painting and sculptures, just to name a few.

Besides just in Balboa Park, there are also a number of other great museums that you will not want to miss while in San Diego. Here are four other great museums around town:

o Children's Museum: Have fun with the kids at this interactive creative zone for children to explore the arts.

o SD Chinese Historical Museum: Learn about the heritage of Chinese culture with artifacts and photos in a building that was once a Chinese mission.

o SD Aircraft Carrier Museum: Follow the story of the Navy's Midway with over 40 exhibits featuring 21 completely restored aircrafts.

o SD Maritime Museum: Learn the history of US naval advancement and also board and explore real anchored ships.

Again, these are just some of the great museums San Diego has to offer. There are many others worth visiting as well, but I hope these will get your started learning and exploring accounts of local and national history.

Manitowoc, Wisconsin is situated on the shore of Lake Michigan. Followed Rte 42 South. Passed by an abandoned mine shaft build and hoist house in Maplewood. They were similar in position and style of the ones at the Quincy Mines in Hancock, MI. We don't know what was mined at this site. Because we were towing, we did not stop to ask.

Manitowoc is the home of a great maritime museum. We have been there before a few years ago. Since that time they moved into a new quarters and built a very large museum. Manitowoc was a major ship building community of WWII. Their specialty was submarines. Yes, submarines on Lake Michigan. The USS Cobra is a WWII sub, harbored on the Manitowoc River, which is open to tourists. Ironically, in the Midwest you can tour two important submarines form both combating sides during the war: the German U505 in Chicago and USS Cobra in Manitowoc.

Manitowoc is also the home of Natural Ovens Baking Company. This company started in 1976 by Paul Stitt, who saw the need for fresh satisfying, preservative-free whole grain food. Natural Ovens moved their operation into larger facilities. They offer tours of the facilities and of the adjacent farm and museum during the weekday mornings. Believe it or not the tours are for FREE.

Set up camp at the Expo Center (Manitowoc Fair Grounds). Morgana had fun exploring all of the new scents from the various exhibition halls. The grounds were only a few minutes from Gene and Sue's house. Gene, Maggie's brother, is known as the Birdman of Manitowoc. He has eight birds living with him: seven parrots and one cockatiel. The also has three shelties, they look like small collie dogs. He can be seen sitting on his front lawn with a parrot on his arm and the three dogs at his feet. He is quite a sight, especially because across the street is statue of a large cow in front of an ice cream shop. Gene passed away in February, 2007.

Two Rivers, pronounced trivers, was holding an Ethnic Fest this day. Gene, his wife Sue, Mags, and I went. Gene went for the fried smelts (little fish caught in Lake Michigan. I tried the pepper steak sandwich at the Australian food booth. It was delicious. I wore half of the sauce on my shirt and jeans.

Two Rivers is the birthplace of the sundae. This was an ice cream concoction available only on Sunday. People clamored for it on other days. So the name sundae stuck.

That evening Gene, quite the thespian, was appearing in a farce, Flaming Idiots. He played the role of Ernesto Santiago from Norway, really a bag man for a mob boss. The play is filled with zany characters. The play has many, many laughs, not only from the dialogue, but also from the sight gags. Definitely a fun play to see and enjoy.

An interesting aspect about the theater in which the play in being performed is that it is haunted. The site is the Forst Inn of Tisch Mills. Tish Mills is a dot on the map, merely a crossroads along the stage coach path to Green Bay. The Inn is now a B & B, a bar/restaurant, and sandwich theater. One room is haunted by Frances, a lady who was born there and lived in the same room throughout her long life. She has decided not to leave the inn. Late at night the staff hears doors closing and creaks on the stairs. During Prohibition, Frances, as a young girl, had to go into a hidden crawl space to fetch the contraband hooch.

Croatia boasts a large number of museums and galleries spread across the major population centres of Zagreb, Osijeck, Split and Dubrovnik, the result of its rich cultural and political heritage.

The Dubrovnik Museum is located in the Duke's Palace where it hosts up to 15,500 cultural and historical exhibits. Visitors can view 17th-19th century furniture, uniforms worn by dukes and councilors, garments worn by aristocrats, and so on.

The Maritime Museum offers a view of maritime history for Dubrovnik and Croatia from its location in the Sveti Ivan fortress. A Dominican monastery and a Franciscan monastery store jewellery, paintings, embroidery, sculptures, manuscripts, incunabula and music notes. The patron saint of Dubrovnik St. Blaise is venerated in the Dubrovnik cathedral's treasury, where his relics remain in safekeeping along with numerous paintings and artworks. At the Rupe Ethnographical Museum, one can see traditional occupations and the rural architecture of Dubrovnik as well as national costumes and handmade textiles.

Dubrovnik is also home to the Art Gallery, Luza Art Centre and Sebastian, where many exhibitions are staged over the course of the year. In Zagreb, the most popular galleries are the Strossmayer Gallery, Gallery of Modern Art, Ethnographic Museum and the Mimara museum, the last of which hosts nearly 4,000 priceless items.

The City Museum of Split was originally a part of the Town library in the Bernardy palace. Once separated, the museum collection was exhibited in six rooms of the Bernardy palace. The museum was completely separated and opened in 1992, hosting items that showed the urban, cultural, historic, artistic and economical development of Split.

The Museum of Croatian Archaeological Monuments is the only Croatian museum engaged in the research, collection, presentation and study of material and spiritual remains of Croats from the Middle Ages.
