A-Frame The large A- shaped structure on the bow. The A-frame suspends the large blocks, which are used to multiply the lifting power of the cables running back to the steam winch. The A-frame was used to lift logs, snags, deadheads, navigational buoys, old cars and lost ship anchors onto the deck.

The boiler is essentially a drum mostly filled with water surrounding the fire box and fire tubes. Oil burns in the firebox and the "fire", the smoke and hot gasses escape out the funnel through fire tubes. Samson V's boiler is a triple pass boiler because the smoke and hot gasses are directed back and forth three times before they can escape up the funnel.

Companionway A deck opening provided with a set of stairs or a ladder leading from one deck to another.
