A-Frame
The large A- shaped structure on the bow. The A-frame suspends the large blocks,
which are used to multiply the lifting power of the cables running back to the
steam winch. The A-frame was used to lift logs, snags, deadheads, navigational
buoys, old cars and lost ship anchors onto the deck.
Aft Behind
Anchor A large, heavy hook for securing a vessel to the bottom to stop
it from drifting. Samson V has two anchors aboard.
Astern Backward, also behind the ship or further aft.
Athwart From side to side.
Berth Bunk.
Bilges The lowest portion of the ship inside the hull.
Boiler Boils water to make steam to run the engines, pumps and winch.
Samson V's boiler is an oil-fired, triple-pass fire-tube boiler. The
boiler is essentially a drum mostly filled with water surrounding the fire box
and fire tubes. Oil burns in the firebox and the "fire", the smoke and
hot gasses escape out the funnel through fire tubes. Samson V's
boiler is a triple pass boiler because the smoke and hot gasses are directed back
and forth three times before they can escape up the funnel.
Bow The forward part of the ship.
Bridge Wheelhouse or pilot house.
Companionway A deck opening provided with a set of stairs or a ladder leading
from one deck to another.
Deck A deck in a ship corresponds to a floor in a building.
Foredeck The deck of a ship near the bow. On Samson V, this
is the working area under and around the A-frame.
Funnel The smoke stack, allows the smoke from boiler to exhaust.
Galley The space on a ship where food is prepared.
Gasket Packing material, by which air, water, oil or steam tightness is
secured in such places as valves, pipe-joins, hatches etc.
Head A toilet aboard a ship.
Helm Steering mechanism including the rudder, tiller or wheel and any connections.
Paddlewheel
The means of propulsion on a sternwheeler. A wheel with transverse planks that
pushes water as it turns.
Pitman arm A rod or built up member connecting the crosshead on a steam
engine to the crank on the paddle wheel turning the back and forth motion of the
engine into the circular motion of the wheel.
Port The left side of a vessel when facing forward.
Prow The bow of a ship.
Starboard The right hand side of a ship when facing forward.
