Meet the Crew

Samson V had a large crew compared to most modern vessel in her size range. Altogether there were as many as 14 people aboard: the regular crew of 11, plus three night watchmen.

Captain The captain was in command of the vessel and had the overall responsibility for Samson V and her crew.

Mate Sometimes called the first mate or first officer, the mate was licensed to operate Samson V, and, as second in command aboard the vessel, stood watch when the captain took a break.

Chief Engineer The chief engineer was responsible for all mechanical and electrical systems aboard Samson V. The chief knew how everything worked and how to fix it when it didn't.

Oiler The oiler's job was to assist the engineer in the engine-room, and to keep all the moving parts of the engines clean and lubricated.

Firemen (also known as stokers) Samson V had two firemen who worked under the direction of the chief engineer. The firemen ran and maintained the boiler, and all the stoke-hold equipment.

Winchman The winchman operated the steam winch, and was usually one of the more experienced crewmembers onboard.

Bosun The bosun acted as a supervisor for the deckhands. He worked under the direction of the captain and the mate, and his job was to take charge of maintaining Samson V, and her rigging and equipment.

Deckhands Samson V also had two deckhands who handled the lines on board, grappled logs, and generally did everything on deck, under the direction of the captain, mate and bosun.

Cook The cook's job was to maintain the galley, prepare the food, and clean up after the meals.
